Why I Joined Farm Bureau: A Q&A with Jeff Mahoney, Wealth Management Advisor

Jeff Mahoney, CFP, RICP, is a Wealth Management Advisor based in Lakeville, Minnesota. With years in the financial industry and a strong tie to rural values, he found his place at Farm Bureau.

Why Did You Join Farm Bureau?

I started with Farm Bureau in March 2019. Before that, I was working for an East Coast brokerage company, and I was looking for a place where I could do more client-centric financial planning. I’ve known about the Farm Bureau name for a long time because I grew up in rural Minnesota. I’ve known the agents here since I was a little kid. The culture at Farm Bureau is very ag-centric, which speaks to who I am. It’s a nice intersection of my background and my future. It felt right.

What Do You Love Most About Your Job as a Wealth Management Advisor?

The best part about what I do is getting to hear people’s stories and meet them where they’re at. I have clients across the spectrum. For a small business owner who is just starting to make it, I help them figure out ways to utilize assets and save for retirement while they are growing their business. For a family at the other end, I’ll help them confirm that they can retire with confidence. It’s fun for me to meet all sorts of different people and figure out how to best position myself to be a resource for them.

What’s a Typical Day Like for You?

To say here’s what I do on Monday versus Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday that just doesn’t exist. One of the unique aspects of this role is I oftentimes have to go to agency offices, so I’m in my car a lot, traveling throughout the state of Minnesota. I am a farm boy at heart, so it’s fun for me to get out in rural areas and meet people who have that view of the world.

When I’m not traveling, I’m in my office, and I structure things on a day-to-day basis. I’m organized, but at the same time I have to be flexible because I never know what I’m going to get when I walk in for the day.

What Advice Can You Offer People Who Are Considering Becoming Wealth Management Advisors with Farm Bureau?

What they should figure out is whether the culture is right for them. Insurance and protection of farmers and ag-related businesses is truly the backbone of the company. I grew up on a farm, and I have a small-town background, so that served me well.

What Are You Looking Forward to In Your Job?

It’s been fun to see the progression from a little over three years ago to where we are now.

If we continue on that path, the capabilities and the intelligence will continue to build. I think the sky is the limit for the team.

What Do You Like to Do in Your Spare Time?

I like to be outdoors. My wife and I have an 8-year-old and a 6-year-old, and we camp a lot in the summer. In Minnesota, we run hard in the summertime because we know those days are fleeting. I love to golf and do a little fishing, and in the winters I’m a wrestling official.
